Just when you thought it was safe to turn the lights out, click off the tv and call this one over, the Cowboys finish in a flurry. The Cowboys turn the tables on MNF and steal a victory away from the Eagles just as the Redskins had done to the Cowboys earlier this year.
The Cowboys offense struggled most of the night against one of the leagues best defenses. Drew Bledsoe was only able to muster 196 yards passing with a touchdown and an interception and the Cowboys were only able to rush for 58 total yards.
The biggest surprise of the night was how well the Eagles ran the ball. The Eagles have basically ignored the running game all year but came out Monday Night and pounded the ball 36 times for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns. The kind of performance that will almost always get a victory or at least keep the game close.
The Cowboys and Eagles traded touchdowns in the first quarter, both teams putting together long drives culminating in touchdown runs by Brian Westbrook and Marion Barber. An interception by Lito Sheppard led to the Eagles 2nd quarter touchdown, a short run by Donovan McNabb. That is the way the first half ended with the Eagles on top 14-7.
The Eagles were able to put together 2 drives in the 2nd half for 2 field goals to increase their lead 20-7 while the Cowboys offense struggled to move the ball with any consistency.
With the game winding down, the Cowboys offense finally struck. The Cowboys went 72 yards on 4 plays to score their 2nd touchdown of the night, a 20 yard touchdown pass from Bledsoe to Terry Glenn. With just over 3 minutes left to play the Cowboys were within striking distance at 20 - 14.
The Eagles needed to wind some clock so they went back to what they typically do best, pass the ball. On the second play from scrimmage after the Cowboys 1st touchdown of the second half, Donovan McNabb dropped back to pass. The play appeared to be a pass in the left flat to WR Ronnie Brown, but Cowboys safety Roy Williams stepped in front of the pass. Roy was near the line of scrimmage, faking a blitz and just so happened to be in position to make a play. Roy intercepted a pass that appeared to be destined for him more than an Eagle and took the ball back 46 yards for the go ahead touchdown.
On the interception return, Donovan McNabb was injured by a crucial block thrown by Cowboys Linebacker Bradie James.
With more than 2 and half minutes to play, the Eagles still had plenty of time to come back and win but McNabb was badly hobbled during the Eagles next series and unable to move the ball. The Cowboys were only able to milk a minute off the clock and when the Eagles got the ball back, it was Eagles backup Mike McMahon at the helm instead of Donovan McNabb. McMahon moved the ball in position for a last second 60 yard field goal attempt by David Akers. Fortunately for the Cowboys the kick fell woefully short and the Cowboys escaped Philly with an unimaginable victory in hand.
