Betting on the Dallas Cowboys

Are you kidding me? I have only one hard fast rule, always bet with your head, never your heart. There in lies the problem. My heart is with my Cowboys! They will always win, so my heart says. And because of that simple rule, I never bet for or against the Dallas Cowboys. It just makes life easier. I could not in good conscious root against the Cowboys, no way. If I bet against them, a small piece of me would think it was ok to loose, because I would win. It's almost a 'Catch 22'. If I bet against the Cowboys and they won the game, I would be happy for the victory and saddened by the loss of the bet. If the Cowboys lost the game, I would saddened by the loss but happy for the earned revenue. And of course there is always the inevitable, Cowboys loose and cover (double whammy!) It gets complicated, but one thing is not complicated, I don't bet on Dallas Cowboy games.

I just don't break the Dallas Cowboys down good enough to make intelligent wagers. And breaking teams down, determining good matchups or bad matchups, figuring out trends, is what successful NFL gamblers do. I understand the basics, home dogs by a touchdown are gold, but the basics don't cover everytime and when the Cowboys are involved, the basics go out the window.

Now there was a time before the implementation of the 'don't be with your heart rule' came into effect and I would eagerly plop down some heard earned cash (saved lunch money) on my beloved Cowboys! I would pick my spots, bet on no brainers, and win with ease, most of the time. Of course the bet was not with Vegas or an Online Casino, it was with a buddy at school, typically one that did not care for the Cowboys, and points were not usually involved (wouldn't it be nice)!

But just like any betting game, the odds catch up with you, and one season, all the odds came crashing down hard. It started off slow, a loss early in the season to a surprisingly good team that in years past had been mediocre at best. Those are the teams that get you every time, especially today, its hard to tell which teams will be the surprise team. A good reason not to bet early in the season, let a few weeks go by and get a feel for how good each team is. So I lost a 10 spot early in the season and back then it would take me a few weeks to save that much cash. A few weeks later I lost another 10 spot and was all of the sudden beginning to doubt my betting genious. I decided to save for a few months and plop it all down on the Cowboys later in the season, maybe the playoffs and win it all back plus some, 'famous last words'. Well, my theory went South in a hurry, I had not quite a benjamin (slang for $100) on the Cowboys in the playoffs and a heartbreaking loss cost me my hard earned (saved) cash! It took a few months to recover, not just from the loss of money but from the loss itself. A loss is hard to take but a last second playoff loss is even harder! I learned my lesson that day, I was blind to the trends, I was blind to the match ups, I was just blind to any aspect of the game that didn't have the Cowboys on top. I have not bet on the Cowboys since and life is much easier!

I enjoy trying to beat the Vegas odds makers as much as the next guy. Thinking I have more insight to the game, more information about matchups. It's and ego rush to out think, out play, and out wit the pros. I just use common sense, I never bet what I can't loose, I typically only bet a few games a weekend, and last I set a limit on what I can loose in a season. Last season (2003) I put $100 in an Online Casino account and when it was gone, it was gone! Sometimes I won, sometimes I lost but in the end, I had fun trying to out wit the Pros!

When it comes to betting on NFL games there are a few of rules that I have come up with to keep me sane and out of trouble;
1. Never bet with your heart (I don't bet on Cowboy games)
2. Never bet with your Freinds (I just creates unwanted friction)
3. Don't bet on every game, pick your spots, 2 or 3 a week is plenty.
4. Never bet what you can't afford to loose.
5. Set your maximum allowance for the year and quit when your bank is DRY!
6. Set your maximum bet and stick with it, don't try to double up on Monday night and make up for your Sunday losses!
7. Stick with one sport at a time, just because baseball and basketball tend to overlap the NFL, avoid the urge to make up your losses on some mid week games.
