When
it comes to football cards, it all stops and starts with Topps!
Topps is by far the grandfather of the football card today.
Topps began producing football cards in the 50's when they
released a 1950 Topps Felt backs set. Topps produced baseball
cards starting in 1951 but didn't produce another football
set until 1955 when they released the Topps All-American set.
In 1956 Topps produced its first Pro Football set and hasn't
stopped yet, releasing 1 or more sets every year since! The
first Dallas Cowboys Topps football cards was in 1960
and with the exception of 1964-1967, Topps has produced Dallas
Cowboys football cards every year since!
For many years Topps has zero competition in the sports card
market but in 1989 2 more companies joined in the game; Score
and Pro Set. In 1990 a couple more jumped in, Fleer and Action
Packed. In 1991 the gates started to open wider when Pinnacle,
Wild Card, Pacific, Pro Line, All World, and Upper Deck joined
the mix. From 1993 to 1997 things got a little crazy with
many companies jumping in and out of the market, but Topps
has remained a main stay.
Today Topps produces many different brands including Bowman,
Stadium Club, All American, Finest, Draft Picks & Prospects,
Total, Pristine, and the every popular Topps (original).
For many collectors, its Topps or nothing. If your going
to collect only one brand, Topps is likely your choice!
