Home > News > Cowboys win preseason finale.

Most teams take the final preseason game off. Most teams rest their starters and start thinking about the opener. But the Cowboys and mostly Bill Parcells aren't most teams. The Cowboys finished the 2004 preseason at home on Thursday night Sept. 2nd, 2004 vs the Kansas City Chiefs just 3 days after the Monday night game vs the Titans.

Most of the starters played 1.5 to 2 quarters. QB Vinny Testaverde, although not as sharp as Monday night was able to move the ball some and got the Cowboys on the board early when Eddie George plunged in for a TD from 3 yards out. Eddie George, aside from the TD has sub par numbers. Julius Jones, the expected starting RB did not play due to sore Ribs. Tony Romo got his 1st chance to play with some starters and second string players and was flawless scoring on all 3 of this possessions (2 TD's, 1 FG), going 12 for 14, 141 yards and TD with no interceptions. Drew Henson was not as sharp and in fact looked kind of frustrated as he went 0 for 4 with an interception.

The defense appeared stronger giving only 2 TD's, both coming off of big plays. The sacked the QB 3 times, one by Keith O'Neil, one by Chad Eaton, and one by Marcellus Wiley late in the game. Safety Keith Davis got burned early in the game on a long TD when he took a bad angle at the pass receiver made up for for it by leading the team in tackles with 5 including some highlight reel hits.

Players of note were; Tony Romo was the star of the game, not missing a beat and solidifying his backup QB role. ReShard Lee gained 45 yards on 13 carries including a 28 yard TD run in the 3rd quarter helping his cause for making the team. Richie Anders was stellar with 46 yards on only 4 carries including a un-fullback like 32 yard run. Antonio Bryant led the team with 4 catches for 64 yards and 1 TD. Jason Witten had another solid game with 4 catches for 49 yards. Randall Williams also had 4 catches for 34 yards but was injured on this last catch and had to be helped up.

Billy Cundiff made all his kicks (1 FG and 3 XP's). Matt McBriar continued to shine in his punting duties averaging 45.4 yards a punt with a long of 60. I don't think the Cowboys had a 60 yard punt all of last year and never came close to a 45 yard average in any game. Punting will likely be the Cowboys biggest improved position.

Safety Keith Davis led the way in Tackles with 5, LB Bradie James had 4 as did Dat Nguyen.
