Home > News > Cowboys beat Titans on Monday Night Football.

Aside from the penalties and one errant pass, the first team offense appeared to be in mid season form. The Dallas Cowboys came out and showcased their passing skills on Monday night by lighting up the airways in the first half with 240 yards passing. Vinny Testaverde had plenty of time in the pocket and he proved, given time to pass, he can be very affective. As Parcells would say, he can throw the ball, he just needs the protection. The Cowboys scored on 3 possessions, 1 TD and 2 Field Goals in the first half. With most of the focus on the passing game, the running game was unaffective, Eddie George had a mere 3 yards on 4 carries. Not exactly what he would have liked to show his old team but non the less, the Cowboys won the game and it is only pre season.

The first team defense continued to struggle somewhat giving up 2 touchdown drives in the first half. Each drive was highlighted by big plays in the passing game. The first touchdown drive was highlighted by a 37 yard completion from Steve McNair to Tyson Calico just over cornerback Jameel Powell. A few plays later, some shotty tackling allowed running back Chris Brown to scamper 18 yards for a touchdown. Late in the half, just after the Cowboys had taken the lead with a touchdown pass from Vinny Testaverde to Tight end Dan Campbell, the Titans quickly moved the ball 71 yards on 5 plays highlighted by a 62 yard pass from Volek to Douglas as safety Tony Dixon appeared to be turned around and out of position.

The only highlight for the Cowboys second and third string offense came in the 3rd quarter when Drew Henson hit Jason Witten on an out pattern for 31 yards setting up a 6 yard touchdown run by Rashard Lee to give the Cowboys the lead for good. The Cowboys second and third string defense faired much better than the first sting allowing only a late field goal in the second half and recording the Cowboys first quarter back sacks of the preseason, getting a total of 3, 2 from rookie linebacker Kalen Thornton and 1 from rookie cornerback Nathan Jones.

Players of note were Vinny Testaverde who looked better than he has this preseason and aside from the 1 interception which was a great catch by the Titans linebacker, had an almost perfect game. Drew Henson had a couple of nice passes, but nothing to write home about. Julius Jones recorded another nice game, 29 yards on 8 carries and ReShard Lee contributed a lot helping solidify his spot on the team with 21 yards and a touchdown. Jason Witten had 7 catches for 109 yards and appears to be on the verge of stardom, Keyshawn Johnson hauled in 8 balls, Terry Glenn had 3, Dan Campbell had the only TD catch, and Antonio Bryant had one catch.... I hope this isn't a pattern, naw, just preseason.

Billy Cundiff hit on all his kicks, 2 field goals, 2 XPs. Matt McBriar continued to shine in the punting duties and appears to have solidify his spot on the team. Matt had 5 punts averaging 40 yards with a long of 57 (I don't think the Cowboys had a 57 yard punt all of last season).

Roy Williams, minus one missed tackled, shined the most on defense with 5 tackles and an assist, Bradie James had 4 tackles and appears that he will get a lot of playing time this season. Kalan Thornton had 2 sacks.
