The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are the cheerleading team for the Dallas Cowboys and before them were the male-female group known as CowBelles & Beaux. The present cheerleading group consists of local high school students. When CowBelles & Beaux started cheerleading, it wasn’t the right time for cheerleaders for they did not earlier get the attention they do now more so probably because the group contained men as well. It was in 1969 that the decision to drop males from the group was taken and an ‘all girls’ squad was created by the name Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and had students from the Dallas Fort Worth area.

The cheerleading squad underwent some significant changes in its course. The initial change was to drop men from the squad and then the Cowboys manager Tex Schramm wanted to change the image further. Initially he wanted that the cheerleading done by Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders would be a more dance routine than the regular high school cheerleading and also changed their uniforms. This change was brought about in the 1970 gaming season. Cheerleaders were selected from 10 local high schools who were also made responsible for redesigning their uniforms as well as introducing a new style in cheerleading.

The new dance style that the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders were to introduce was under the guidance of Dee Brock and a current choreographer. The qualification rules changed in 1971 that allowed not just local females to compete for a spot but also the officers from the high school drill team. 1972 saw the entry of a new choreographer, Texie Waterman from New York who was responsible for auditioning as well as training a new squad (all above the age of 18 years) comprising of females only. His responsibility as a trainer was not just to train, but also discover raw talent in performers, attractive appearances as well as athletic abilities. The uniforms needed redesigning to include more attractiveness and a raw appeal.

The first appearance of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders was made in the 1972-1973 NFL season and got even better national attention in 1978. This was the year that this cheerleading squad appeared on two network television specials – the NBC Rock-n-Roll Sports Classic and the Osmond Brothers Special on ABC. In addition to this, the group also had their very own special episode for an hour that launched the season for the Monday Night football. The next year grew even better for them. On the 14th of January 1979, a made-for-TV movie appeared by the name The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and demanded 48% share of the television audience. In 1980 a sequel of this movie was aired on 13th of January.

The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders have traveled throughout the United States as well as overseas including regular appearances in the United Service Organizations (USO) Tours. They have featured in music televisions and have made regular visits. Every year thousands of aspiring girls participate in the auditions to achieve one spot in the popular squad the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.
